Classroom management has to be one of the most challenging, yet most important skills that teachers will learn. I have talked about classroom management in the past and offered some tips and advice in this video.
But one important aspect I didn't talk about was the importance of transitions. Transitions are really important, most especially when teaching young learners or students with a low level of English. This is because when transitioning between two activities, it's really easy to lose students' attention and that's when you start to see that unwanted behavior.
So here are ten, simple transition songs to help you keep your student's attention when switching activities.
1. Starting Class - Are you Criss Cross
(Tune: Are You Sleeping)
Are you criss-cross?
Are you criss-cross?
Eyes on me, eyes on me.
Hands in your lap.
Hands in your lap.
Eyes on me, eyes on me.
2. Starting Class - Be On The Floor
(Students chant and clap with you while walking to class)
5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Be on the floor when I'm done.
5 clap, clap, clap
4 clap, clap, clap
3 clap, clap, clap
2 clap, clap, clap
1 clap, clap, clap
I'm ready!
3. In-Class Transition - Roly Poly
(students chant and roll fists with you)
Rolly polly, rolly polly up.
Rolly polly, rolly polly down.
Rolly polly, rolly polly out.
Rolly polly, rolly polly in.
4. In-Class Transition - Roll, Roll, Roll
(sitting to standing transition)
Roll, roll, roll
Roll, roll, roll
Rolllllllll up
Rolllllllll down

Rolllllllll down
This time all the way up, up, up.
And, feet on the mat, clap
Feet on the mat clap, clap.
And, feet on the mat, clap
Feet on the mat clap, clap.
1, 2, music. please! (start music)
5. In-Class Transition - Roll, Roll, Roll
(standing to. sitting transition)
3, 2, 1 *Deep breath, gasp
(deflate like a balloon, shake. your body and sit down)
6. Line-Up Chant - Are you ready for the hall?
Are you ready for the hall
Are you standing nice and tall
Are your hands behind your back
Are you leaving any gaps
Are you as quiet as can be
Are you looking straight at me
Now, lets, go, quietly.
7. Line-Up Chant - Are you ready for the hall?
My hands are hanging by my side,
I'm standing straight and tall.
My eyes are looking straight ahead,
I'm ready for the hall.
8. Bathroom Chant - Wash, wash, wash your hands
Wash, wash, wash your hands,
soap will make them clean.
Scrub the germs till they fall off,
germs go down the drain.
9. End of Class Chant - What time is it?
What time is it?
What time is it?
It's snack time, it'snack time.
What time is it?
What time is it?
It's snack time, its snack time.
10. Clean Up Chant - Tidy Up, Tidy Up
(Tune: Jingle Bells)
Tidy up, tidy up put the toys away
Tidy up, tidy up we're finished for the day
Tidy up, tidy up put the toys away
